Class Description
Nicknamed “CRIM”, our 3-day criminal investigations program is for those new to the world of criminal investigations. Generally, Texas PI’s only do criminal investigations in three unique situations: 1. As cold cases 2. When a client wants their own investigator even though police are investigating, which requires some finesse and 3. When a police investigation is non-existent, suspended, or not reported.
While this course will not teach you everything you need to know to investigate a possible crime, it will help you to protect a crime scene and evidence, to think like a detective, and to understand what law enforcement and defense attorneys need for court. In certain cases, when there are no other options, you will need to collect evidence and this course teaches you the basics.
CRIM includes three Classes:
CRIME SCENES 104
TRAINING HOURS
8 hours of training
Crime scenes are often the beginning of investigations. If you happen upon a crime as a Texas Private Investigator, you’ll know what to do after taking this class. We will also address collection of evidence, evidence chains, interviews, OSINT-related crime techniques and more.
The basis of this class is a mock crime scene which we will examine as a team led by an experienced former police detective. Will we solve the case? Good question, but a better question is will you learn the important procedures needed to collect evidence and identify a suspect?
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS 105
TRAINING HOURS
8 hours of training
Criminal investigations training is a big area of study. For this class, we return to our founder’s “open mouth, insert fire hose” training methodology. We will briefly discuss the different types of criminal investigations and then focus on one or two to give you some depth into how they are performed. We will look at a couple of real cases and “work them” for practice.
Training criminal investigators can take years, but this class will give you a good start and a clear plan on how to develop the skills necessary for success.
DEALING WITH POLICE AND DEFENSE ATTORNEYS 106
TRAINING HOURS
6 hours of training
The results of criminal investigations by private investigators are normally documented in a report that is shared with the client’s attorneys and/or with law enforcement. A properly done investigative report can end up in court and have a major impact on a case. The structure of this report as well as how the initial communication occurs is important to your ultimate success in any criminal investigation. We will discuss strategies and techniques for dealing with cops and attorneys including the approach, documentation, and follow-up.
For example, in one case involving a rolex watch.
In addition, we will discuss interaction with federal agencies, state agencies, and non-profit groups. Lesson #1: If there’s a crime, the case belongs to law enforcement. Private investigators can play a positive role in its resolution, but only if we handle it right.
